About theatre

The theatre was founded on October 18, 1942 and inherited both the building and name of Vera Komissarzhevskaya, a great actress who gained her reputation as leading lady in Vsevolod Meyerhold performances during the late 19th century. The theatre continued working throughout the blockade of Leningrad. The theater strengthened the moral courage of citizens of Leningrad and helped them to survive. The theatre is interesting for its good troupe and original repertoire, became very popular in the city. It has received many national awards and gained worldwide recognition.

In this building the Passage theatre has been located before the revolution. It has been constructed in 1848 by the architect G.A. Zhelyazevich. Since 1904 it has been rented by various theatre troupes. The great Russian actress Vera F. Komissarzhevskaya has performed in Vsevolod Meyerhold's plays here during 1904-1906. The theater is known for its modern treatment of classic plays.

The repertoire of the theatre is presented by classical ballets, including famous Giselle and Swan Lake and also outstanding drama performances.

The dress code: formal style. During the cold season (autumn, winter, early spring) remember about a possible snow and rain outside, that’s why don’t forget to take shoes to change and to leave your coat and hat in the cloakroom.

Located in the heart of St.Petersburg near the Nevsky prospect, the Komissarzhevskaya Theater is really easy accessible on foot, by taxi or by metro.
